2015 Great Lakes Operational Meteorology Workshop

Dates: August 25-27 (8am-5pm on the 25th/26th with release at 12pm on the 27th). Note: hotel check-in will be on August 24 and check-out will be on August 27, for those interested in attending the full conference.

Location:

Amway Grand Hotel, downtown Grand Rapids MI (www.amwaygrand.com)

Invited guests: NWS meteorologists, broadcast meteorologists, experts in related sciences, academia, AMS/NWA, stakeholders, etc.

Purpose of meeting:

Great Lakes weather presents significant hazards and challenges. The Great Lakes Operational Meteorology Workshop is designed to bring together several entities to share knowledge, experience, and techniques to recognize high impact events and communicate them to stakeholders. Both science sharing and service deliveries will be focused on. At this time, we are discussing the possibility of having a student poster session. Another item we are considering is allocating 5 to 15 minute segments for talks. The 5-minute talks would be more "rapid fire" to hit a few main points, for those not interested in filling the traditional 15 minutes but still want to convey a few concepts to the attendees to generate discussion later. We'll have more details as the planning process continues. We want to make this an enjoyable conference for all who attend.

Logistic information:

A hotel reservation link will be sent out in another formal announcement soon. Negotiated room rates are $124/night. For comparison, normal rates start at $225/night. Parking will be $19/day, unless you would prefer the valet option at $29/night. This hotel features numerous restaurants on site (http://amwaygrand.com/dining), has a full service spa and salon, pool, workout center, shops, etc. Many restaurants and entertainment options are within walking distance from the hotel. We plan on offering attendees a group outing option at this conference. More information about conference registration will be coming, as well as a call for abstracts. I just wanted to get some of the basic info to you early enough for your consideration.
