Dr. Mark Guishard

ABSTRACT: This talk is based on Dr. Guishard’s experiences in forecasting tropical cyclone impacts and their air-sea interactions, the role that this plays in risk analysis, and how coastal vulnerability is just as (if not more) important to the assessment of hurricane risk as characteristics and frequency of storms at landfall.

BIO: Dr. Mark Guishard is the Program Manager for the Risk Prediction Initiative, at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. He is a certified meteorologist, with 15 years’ experience in the Bermuda Weather Service, six of those as its Director. His research into Atlantic hurricanes and subtropical storms led him to complete a PhD in Meteorology from Penn State University in 2006, under the supervision of Prof. Jenni Evans. His undergraduate and Master’s degree are from the University of East Anglia. Dr. Guishard has experience as an operational forecaster, with training from the UK Met Office and the US National Hurricane Center. He has served on intergovernmental committees focusing on assessment, mitigation and warning of natural hazards, in addition to advising local policy-makers. Following his career in operational meteorology, Mark spent some time as a reinsurance analyst and risk modeler. His research interests are disaster risk reduction, climate risk, and natural hazards as they pertain to the re/insurance industry.
